//may17,26 – rock is back?

seeing new rock music being pushed by msm was confusing to me for a few minutes til i thought about it.

they deplatformed rock music in the 2000s because of its anti-corpo attitude & having to deal with 5 divas instead of 1. it’s easier to market&control rap&pop artists anyways.

liberty spike mohawk and his chinstrap buddy show up on the front of a Spotify editorial playlist and confuse me. as did a Julia Wolf acoustic song dropping into gaze (which is fire btw, not hating)

It’s been a few years of thinking when MGK did the thing and then a few people kinda swaggerjacked it, that it was gonna fade out and we’d be back to trap hihats in Bell hold music. But the machine is pushing rock again. They’re giving punk a platform in the most dangerous sociopolitical landscape in decades?

Oh wait. It’s all 30 year old dudes crying about their high school ex and doing drugs. Doing their best Sum41 & Limp Bizkit impressions. Being derivative without any of the things that made the originals what they were. For an audience of kids who grew up on songs teaching them to brush their teeth over 808s and autotune (which is fire btw, not hating)

Hopefully what comes next is that rock gets a platform, and some actual rock music (not dudes with razor blades shaped guitars because “haha self harm haha cocaine, get it?”) takes over in a few years, and the old heads doing A&R are completely blindsided as did not expect rock musicians to start behaving like rock musicians and pulling shit like a Pearl Jam vs Ticketmaster situation.

They wanted the industry to be trapped and subdued, they got it for 2 decades, and now they’re opening the floodgates to letting us remind them that they are a service to us. we aren’t just pawns to sell tickets for them and only keep 10% for ourselves, or earn $0.007 per stream, or get buried in an algorithm hidden from our own followers if we say something that isn’t ad friendly.

There’s still dive bars, street poles, and decentralized media. There’s still real life connection and community. There’s still psychos like me willing to build a local scene brick by brick, town by town, person by person. (And maybe this time around I won’t be so forgiving.)

Food for thought. Good morning y’all.
