alright boys, i been thinkin too much again.
current plans are to do a hard drive dive and rescue all evergreen music (aka music that hadn’t expired). they all require tweaks to bring them into modern era by removing lines that no longer represent me as a person, but some are simply DoA.
i have some criteria for music expiry:
- if the lyrics no longer represent me and are too core to the song to change without losing the song’s essence
- if the instrumental sounds old and cannot be swapped as its key to the experience
- if I’ve already done a better ‘version’ of the song (eg. boombap ‘im the best’ type songs)
These are all subjective and at my whim, but I can provide some examples.
- Cal’lex songs are pretty much all expired. it all sounds like 2010s white kid beats, the lyrics are all about 16 year old shit, and a lot is just whack.
- YV songs like Fashion Nova are still kinda fire, but the lyrical content loses its lustre if the song leaves 2017.
- A lot of songs like Yeena, Pass Em Around, DMs, go insanely hard but are legit just about abusing drugs and being a whore. I’m okay with that seeping into songs, but if it’s the core concept, there’s no way to slice it to save it. That also goes for songs heavily about ex’s or people i don’t want thinking a rerelease means anything more than ‘this song is cool’
so, what was meant to be a definitive PinkWave and PunkWave spirited duo of albums quickly became questionable.
PinkWave was supposed to be pop, but for some reason I was dropping shit like ‘bihh dun sent me 7 snaps’ and ‘they think i look gay freestyle’ as PinkWave releases. On the flip side, I was dropping non-screamo mildly-hard freestyles on PunkWave when that was supposed to just be screamo trap shit. (PunkWave also had an identity crisis with Froster/Jones/Luzir type shit bleeding in but I digress).
I’ve now split PinkWave into just pop, PunkWave into just screamo trap, and set up a third album for the true core experience of Young Vercetti, which was actually that weird joke freestyle shit I did like ‘Cheque Please’, ‘Ric Flair’, ‘I’m A Bad Person’, etc. As I have double the amount of those than the other 2 lol.
These 3 records are going to be a BITCH to rework and get up to modern standards. a lot of lyrics getting neutered, a lot of beats getting replaced, and a lot of condensing multiple songs into 1, but I’m really excited to be able to upcycle so much content to bring forward into modern day.
Now, through this process I’ve also made some splinter tapes:
- This thing called ‘dirtmob’ was really the first Froster/Jones/Luzir shit and I completely forgot about it. It’s really the core Reddd style power chord guitar w/ trap drums. It ended up rotting because of the uncertainty of whether it qualified as Reddd or YV or something completely different, which the sound has ended up making its way to all 3 brands lol. Good thing there’s no rules anymore and I can just finish them a decade later. I’m unsure if I’ll strip the lyrics and make it a beat tape, finish the verses and make it a Misc tape, or put drums on it and make it a Reddd tape, but the last one seems the most likely as of writing this.
- An Acoustic tape has come together through working on the Live Set. It’s not the tracklist from the live set, but it’s some of those + some that didn’t make the cut.
- Collab tapes have been collected 👀
I’ve been buried in this for 2 days. I’m hoping I can do something to escape this. I used to do this a lot and I called it “tracklisting”, just endlessly swapping shit back and forth thru lists and folders. Doing this since the accident actually just overloads me and debilitates me, so that’s super fucking cool 💁. Hoping I can get this upcycling project into some sort of manageable state to allow me to either structure it properly, or get it to some state in which I’m not just booting up and shutting down 10 times a day taking pot-shots at it.
Oh well. Let’s go
