An extremely talented musician-turned-gamedev made a game that was essentially the full actualization of my college capstone. I ended up getting to Zoom with him (the ole ‘can I pick your brain for ~30 mins’ turned into a 2 hour war-story & gamedev-music philosophy chat) and now we’re friends!!! He sent me some beats and I kiiiiind of fucking slaughtered them. I think these are turning into commission pieces as part of a marketing campaign, so I’m like… being compensated for my bars for the first time in almost a decade (jesus christ) and I did it all without streaming or shows. I did it through finding other dope people who just want to make dope shit.
This might end up being the sequel to the “Reaching Out” post from last month. I’ve been trying to write a followup but it’s been too sour.
- I’ve reconnected with a lot of old music friends from tour! Some went a little weird or didn’t pan out, but there’s maybe like ~5 or so who were excited to hear from me and chatted. I got some collabs coming through and it’s great to kind of see like, who my actual friends were and who was just fuckin wit me cuz I had more than 40 followers back then lol.
- The IG collabs I tried to facilitate went terribly. Someone with 2k followers (despite consistently posting since 2017) told me he won’t jump on that ~30 min Zoom with me unless I paid him $500 upfront for a 16 bar verse. He’s a super dope artist but I just… I didn’t vibe with that. Like, he knew it wasn’t a for-profit project and everything. Idk. Just weird.
- 2 local rappers I’ve reconnected with did some weird passive-aggressive-caught-red-handed-and-still-couldn’t-admit-they-were-being-weird shit. They both apologized but it was very like… ‘kid in the principals office who in no way could ever realistically fess up to the war-crimes they committed but are staring at the ground looking up at you with puppy dog eyes to please just end it’ type shit. Blegh.
These experiences aren’t going to stop me from moving forward with extending my hand out for hopeful handshakes in return. I think my next networking project is a very exciting one. I may have mentioned it here, but I made myself a tool to visualize my old touring contact book (including my Canada tour scouting) and although many contacts/names/etc are expired, I’m repopulating the list and I have some plans to do some reconnecting nation wide. Whether a verse, a cypher, a music video, an EP, some shows, or just some chats and some beers, I’m really excited to get back out into this world and share my knowledge and talent with people with similar values and talents.
